1. My City Life: This great Facebook application allows you to begin your own city. Your job is to work toward creating the best city possible. This includes building homes for citizens, as well as creating things for them to do. Plan out where office buildings should go, and make room for parks, museums and gardens. You can also build entertainment and sports venues. You also need to create policies to help manage crime and reduce pollution. A fun way to see if you can build the kind of great city that is so illusive in real life.
2. My Town: Another great Facebook application, My Town is a fun game that you can play in order to build your own city. You can use decorations and buildings to create a city that has its own bustling economy. You can collect revenues and unlock more features as you progress. Your friends can also enjoy your town, exploring what you have. In turn, you can visit their towns as well. It’s a great way learn the basics of city planning, and enjoy building a town anyone would be proud to live in.
3. City of Wonder: Are you interested in being a city planner in ancient Rome? How about being a Stone Age city planner? A fun game that lets you choose your historical period, from Classical to Medieval, you can build an amazing city right from your dreams. It is even possible to create a city from the Modern age. So you can build something in the now if you want. Get your city game on, and share your results with your friends on Facebook. A fun way to kill a couple hours.
4. Social City: Do you want to be an awesome mayor in an awesome city? You have your chance when you play Social City. This cool game allows you to build your own city, with all the the things you like. From restaurants to amusement parks to skyscrapers, you can create a virtual city that your citizens will love. The animation is fun to see, and you can watch your city grow. Plan where everything goes, and work at being the kind of city planner others aspire to be.
5. Nightclub City: If you want to build a happening, hopping place, you can create your own nightclub. You can add your own nightclub to the city, planning an awesome place to hang out. You can learn how to attract people to your nightclub with a little help from celebrities. You can also learn about kicking people out of your nightclub if they don’t follow the rules. A nightclub is kind of a microcosm of a city, and you can hone your skills using this fun Facebook game.
6. Urban Plans: This cool game allows you to build a city from scratch. You start out with a certain amount of money, and then you work to create a viable city. Add services, such as water treatment plants and electric plans. Add a police force and fire stations. Build homes and connect them to the grid. You can even add a seaport if you want. Blocks are divided up, and you need to figure out the best places for different buildings. Try and attract the most people to your city. A cool way to pass a few hours.
7. LEGO.com City: LEGOs are cool. There is no doubt about that. So it follows that LEGO games must be cool. And this awesome city building game is just one example of a cool LEGO game. Indeed, you can plan a city with all the services you need using LEGO figures online. Use cranes to build tall buildings. Make sure your city has all the essential services, from health services to fire services. This great city planning game is proof that you are never too old to play with LEGOs.
8. MyMiniCity: If you want to play a cool game about city building, you can play this web game. You start out by choosing what country you want your city in, and then watch your city grow. Pick a name for your city, and provide it with the basics, mainly by following directions. First, you have to get people to visit your city in order to increase the population and increase industry and security. It takes some time to build the city up, but it happens casually as you share with your friends. Find other cities, and see where you rank overall.
9. City Creator: You can create a city using a simple drag and drop method. Build roads and buildings. You can also add sky walks, and green spaces. You can build a modern town, or a Medieval city. It is also possible to create a Christmas wonderland with a snow city. When you use the city creator, you can start with a template, and then go from there. It’s really easy to arrange your city — or to demolish part of it if you are no longer satisfied. A simple way to try out your ideas.
10. Cityscape: Create your own city, including schools, hospitals, roads, utilities and more. You want to provide your citizens with a good place to live, and you can do that with this game. Send explorers out to find mines so that your city has a source of revenue. You can also hire surveyors to help you plan your infrastructure. An addictive game that can lead to the hours flying by.

1. Amsterdam, Netherlands: The capital and largest city in the Netherlands, Amsterdam has flourished from the 14th century. In the early 17th century, a comprehensive plan was developed that was based on four concentric half-circles of canals with their ends emerging at the IJ bay. Today, with little expansion, only 20 percent of trips around the city are in a car. Amsterdam is one of the most bicycle-friendly large cities in the world.
2. Billerica Garden Suburb, Massachusetts: Incorporated in 1914, Billerica offered the country’s first garden suburb designed specifically for workers. Modeled after Ebenezer Howard’s English garden city designs, Billerica combined a limited dividend corporation with co-partnership. Workers would own their homes by purchasing shares. The result was the construction of 70 new homes between 1914 and 1917.
3. Camden Town, London: Camden Town is largely pedestrian, and the number of residential areas is surprising, considering the number of shops and merchants. It is walkable from most central London districts, and dozens of train and transit lines connect to this area, with the main underground tube station right in the center. There is no one age group, race, gender or socio-economic group that outnumbers another as pedestrians mix for entertainment, living and shopping.
4. Chicago Boulevard System: The history of the Boulevard System of Chicago was conceived in 1837 and constantly expanded over the years; but, by 2001, the increasing popularity of the neighborhood and the trend of tearing down single family homes to build multi-unit condominiums threatened the integrity and historic significance of the boulevards. In 2005, the Chicago City Council designated the “Logan Square Boulevards District” as an official city landmark district, preserving this design for future generations.
5. Eugene, Oregon: If you want to know about green cities, Eugene make the top five in the Popular Science America’s 50 Greenest Cities. But, it is the most ambitious in this goal, it seems, as wind-generated and hydroelectric sources now generate 85 percent of its energy. They also introduced a hybrid transit system and plans to be carbon neutral with no waste by 2020. Eugene is known as a walkable, bikeable, accessible, active and involved community.
6. Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri: Thanks to a city-wide effort involving both for-profit and non-profit partners, Forest Park was restored to the world-class stature it held nearly a century ago. Dedicated on 24 June 1876, and site of the 1904 World’s Fair, the park is home to St. Louis’s major cultural institutions as well as to some of the city’s oldest forested areas. At 1,293 acres, it is approximately 500 acres larger than Central Park in New York.
7. Granville Island, Vancouver: Granville Island began its transformation in the late 1970’s from a declining 37-acre industrial park in Vancouver’s False Creek to possibly the most successful urban redevelopment ever seen in North America. Granville Island’s lessons are that great places can be created almost anywhere under any conditions with minimal expense.
8. Greensburg Sustainable Comprehensive Plan: On 4 May 2007, an F-5 class tornado touched down more than 75 times, took 12 lives, and leveled the town of Greensburg, Kansas. Residents translated this tragedy as an opportunity to rebuild. The Greensburg City Council enacted a requirement that all publicly funded buildings over 4,000 square feet must be built to the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Platinum certification level, the only city in the world with that level of commitment to sustainable building standards.
9. High Line: Although this elevated park in the sky built on top of the skeleton of an old rail system in New York opened in 2009, it has become one of the world’s greatest urban experiments in turning a former industrial relic into a park. Since then, 2 million visitors have strolled along the six-block greenway between 14th and 20th Streets. Recently, it was announced that the High Line will double in length over the next year.
10. Lijnbaan in Rotterdam: This area represents the first purpose-built pedestrian street (little to no auto traffic), opened in 1953. It served as a model for what are known as “pedestrian malls” in the U.S. While still in their infancy, some examples include: Boulder, Colorado; Buffalo, New York; Portland, Maine and Seattle, Washington. A list of U.S. pedestrian malls, including ones that have re-opened to traffic, is presented by Urban Review STL.
11. Lower Garden District, New Orleans: Despite impacts from hurricanes, this area in New Orleans still contains an extensive collection of 19th-century residential and commercial buildings, many pre-dating the Civil War and 150-year-old oak trees. Most of the streets are one-lane residential or two-lane commercial; however, vehicles do not dominate this neighborhood.
12. Marimont, Ohio: When Thomas J. Emery died in 1906, his widow, Mary Emery, undertook to erect a new town intended to serve as a national exemplar for suburban American and a permanent monument to her husband’s memory. Thus, as one of the first planned communities in the United States, Mariemont is well-known for its charming historic architecture, lush foliage, award-winning schools and friendly, community-minded residents.
13. Nine Square Plan, New Haven, Connecticut: Minister John Davenport and merchant Theophilius Eaton laid out a new city in 1638, following the principles of ideal cities gleaned from the Bible. They focused on a central square a half mile on a side, then subdivided into nine squares. This plan established the framework for the central-green, grid-street based village plan used by hundreds of newly settled towns across New England and westward throughout the U.S.
14. Ponce Center City, Puerto Rico: A great grandson of Juan Ponce de León founded Ponce, Puerto Rico, at the end of the 17th Century. Like most Spanish colonial towns, Ponce had a square with a church and a municipal building. An important aspect of Ponce is that it has had the foresight to preserve the many XIX century buildings that stand around the main square’s expanse. While modern with its malls, Ponce has preserved an historic aspect.
15. Sanibel Island, Florida: In 2006 the Sanibel Island community marked the 30th anniversary of the groundbreaking Sanibel Plan that identified nine major ecological zones to help planners designate appropriate land uses, intensity, and performance standards. The plan has since allowed Sanibel to grow without exceeding the island’s natural carrying capacity.
16. South Livermore Valley Specific Plan, California: Faced with the potential loss of thousands of acres of prime agricultural land in the heart of an active wine-producing region, the City of Livermore created an innovative conservation mechanism to curb sprawl and permanently protect the community’s vineyards. Implemented in 1996, by 2006 the plan had resulted in the direct placement of 3,229 acres under permanent agricultural easement.
17. Taos, Pueblo, New Mexico: Possibly one of the earliest high-rise towns, this area has been home to Native Americans since at least the 1500s, and the multi-storied adobe buildings have been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years. As a place, it is unique in being so old, still true-to-form and environmentally appropriate.
18. The Law of the Indies: Developed by the Spanish Crown to direct colonization in the New World, the Laws of the Indies contained instructions for site selection and the layout and construction of new towns. Issued by King Philip, the laws included 148 ordinances. Signed in 1573, the Laws of the Indies are seen as the first wide-ranging guidelines towards design and development of communities.
19. The Miami Valley (Ohio) Region’s Fair Share Housing Plan of 1970: Known as the “Dayton Plan,” Miami Valley’s approach to providing affordable housing opportunities in each of five counties in the region became the first “fair share” housing plan in the nation, influencing federal government policies.
20. The Plan of Philadelphia: Only a year after William Penn approved the siting of the city, the 1683 Plan of Philadelphia was created. Philadelphia was the first large American city to utilize the grid street pattern, to provide dedicated land exclusively for open green public squares, to provide street widths that vary with their functions, and to include a planned area intended to accommodate significant and long-term future growth.

1. James Franco: This hot heart throb is known for his soulful acting, especially in his role as James Dean. This summer, he is everywhere, thanks to his acting with Julia Roberts in Eat, Pray, Love. However, he is also big into education. He has a Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia university and is contemplating a PhD in English Literature from Yale. Franco is known for his ability to write and direct films, as well as for his acting chops.
2. Dexter Holland: When you think of The Offspring, you don’t normally think “smart” (although many of the lyrics have pointed messages). But that doesn’t mean that the members of The Offspring are idiots. Quite the contrary. Indeed, Dexter Holland, the lead singer of the punk rock band, has a masters degree in molecular biology from USC. He started in on a doctorate, but decided that the band came first. Talented musician and scientist!
3. Ron Jeremy: You don’t normally think of porn stars as educated folks. However, famous porn star Ron Jeremy has a masters degree in special education. He actually taught special education in New York City for a few years. But then his girlfriend submitted his photo to a special Playboy section and soon he had offers to take his career in a new direction. And, quite honestly, the world has never been the same, since he helped bring acceptance of porn into the mainstream.
4. David Duchovny: Ever since the X-Files, David Duchovny has wanted to be taken seriously. With a little help from increasingly better film roles, and a turn on an acclaimed HBO series, Duchovny is seen as a serious (and seriously good) actor. However, he has had problems with his image, still, thanks to an admitted sex addiction. However, even with his checkered past, academics can take him seriously with a masters degree English Literature from Yale University.
5. Dolph Lundgren: Sly Stallone fans know Dolph Lundgren as Ivan Drago, Rocky’s Russian opponent in Rocky IV. Lundgren has also been seen in a number of other films. An international karate champion, Lundgren is well known for his prowess in physical accomplishments. However, he is also known for his mental accomplishments. Lundgren has a masters degree in chemical engineering at the University of Sydney. He was even on his way to MIT as a Fulbright Scholar when he got sidetracked by the whole acting thing.
6. Peter Weller: You know him as RoboCop. Students at Syracuse University known him as “professor.” Peter Weller, the actor that portrays the half human, half robot cop on the big screen has a masters degree in Renaissance Art History from Syracuse University. Now he teaches at his alma mater. Weller takes care of his educational side in between continuing to act and also directing. If you’re not careful, this RoboCop will read you information on Renaissance art and Roman architecture. And it’s probably not easy to get an A in his class.
7. Sigourney Weaver: Acting has always been of interest to Sigourney Weaver. She was trained in classic dramatic tradition, and has always wanted to act. Her name was originally Susan, but she renamed herself after a minor character in The Great Gatsby. Weaver went on to study drama at Standford, and then receive a masters degree from Yale in fine arts. Weaver has appeared in experimental plays, and in a number of film roles, in addition to the Alien movie role that made her famous.
8. Art Garfunkel: You expect someone like folk music artist Art Garfunkel to have a degree in Art History. And he does have a bachelors degree in that subject. However, his masters degree from Columbia University is in mathematics. Garfunkel is often known as the “other” guy — in addition to Paul Simon — in the duo Simon & Garfunkel. One of his most recognized accomplishments was singing the lead on the beautiful song “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” There are many that say that Garfunkel spent his time in Simon’s shadow, but his academic achievements say otherwise.
9. Rich Franklin: One of the stars in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is Rich Franklin. He is known for his unique personality — and his unique fighting style. Franklin is known for his advanced Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) style — a style that he has not imitates (although many probably try to imitate him. But Franklin can school you in more than having your butt kicked. He has a masters in education and even taught high school math for a while.
10. Tony La Russa: We don’t often hear of athletes who go on to get advanced degrees, but Tony La Russa is one of them. Currently manager for the St. Louis Cardinals, La Russa has a law degree, and advanced degree which is at least on par with a masters degree.
